‘Miss Shawna’ as her students have grown to call her, offers services in Clarington, Durham Region, and the GTA, and is passionate about making a difference and supporting others to become all they were meant to be. Through a positive and encouraging disposition, her goal is twofold: (1) to provide each person she encounters with a greater awareness as to their individual strengths, talents, and areas for growth, and (2) when working with children, to equip the adults in their lives with a greater understanding as to how to best support them at home and school.
Shawna has nearly 20 years of professional experience attained in various health care and school settings in both Canada and the United States, and is a mother to 3 (very busy!) boys. Like most people, she has also faced her own share of challenges and so she knows first hand how critical it is to receive quality care, support, and service.
Shawna also understands how important professional collaboration and combined experiences are when it comes to striving to meet the complex needs of children. As such, she has an established team of professionals with whom she frequently consults, which include a Speech and Language Pathologist, a Social Worker, a local teacher and tutor, as well a registered Ph.D. level clinical Psychologist.
Shawna’s education includes a Masters of Education degree specializing in School/Educational Psychology, and a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Law in Society, both from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. Additional training related to various mental health, learning, and self-care issues is ongoing as part of Shawna’s professional development. Prior to settling in Ontario, credentials attained include an Education Specialist Credential in Mild-Moderate Disorders (California) as well as a Masters Level Clinical Psychologist license (Michigan). Shawna is a member of the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists, and provides Psychoeducational Assessment services in consultation with a supervisory clinical team/Registered Ph.D. level Psychologist in order to meet the legal and ethical standards in the province of Ontario, which is also required for insurance related purposes.
Outside of work, Shawna loves spending time in the sun with her boys, reading, meeting friends for tea, dreaminging in Homesense, and meeting for puppy play dates with her new teddy bear puppy, Duke (you will likely met him and fall in love!) . In 2015 Shawna and her younger boys crossed off a family bucket list item, and travelled to Villa Altagracia in the Dominican Republic to meet one of their sponsor children, Maria- a life changing experience for all.
