About ‘Miss Shawna’
‘Miss Shawna’ as she is often referred to by her students, is passionate about making a difference and supporting others to become all they were meant to be. Through a positive and encouraging disposition, her goal is twofold: (1) to provide each student with a greater awareness as to their individual strengths, talents, and areas for growth, and (2) to equip the adults in students’ lives with a greater understanding as to how to best support them at school and at home.
In addition to nearly 20 years of professional experience attained in various health care and school settings in both Canada and the United States, Shawna is a mother to 3 very busy boys. Like most people, she has also faced her own share of challenges and so she knows first hand how critical it is to receive quality care, support, and service.
Shawna also knows first hand how important professional collaboration and combined experiences are when it comes to striving to meet the complex needs of children. As such, she has an established team of professionals with whom she frequently consults, which include a Speech and Language Pathologist, a Social Worker, a local teacher and tutor, as well a registered Ph.D. level clinical Psychologist.
Shawna’s educational experiences include a Masters of Education degree specializing in School/Educational Psychology, and a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Law in Society from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. Prior to settling in Ontario, credentials attained include an Education Specialist Credential in Mild-Moderate Disorders (California) as well as a Masters Level Clinical Psychologist license (Michigan). Shawna is a member of the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists, and provides Psychoeducational Assessment services in consultation with a supervisory clinical team in order to meet the legal and ethical standards in the province of Ontario, and for insurane purposes.
Outside of work, Shawna loves spending time in the sun with her boys, reading, writing, meeting friends for tea, dreaminging in Homesense, and on the lake with her favourite people. In 2013 she and 2 of her boys travelled to Villa Altagracia in the Dominican Republic to meet one of their sponsor children, Maria- a life changing experience for all.
